Abstract

1,112,738. Accumulating filamentary, material. NATIONAL-STANDARD CO. 23 Sept. 1966 [26 Nov., 1965], No. 42691/66. Heading D1F. [Also in Division B3] A wire i.e. filamentary material, accumulator comprises a pair of panels defining an upwardly open space for receiving wire in an elongated loop, a partition member movable in the space for adjusting the width of the loop and a motor for drawing the wire from a supply source, the motor being stopped by the opening of a normally-closed switch when there is a predetermined maximum amount of wire in the accumulator. Wire W is drawn from a reel by a grooved wheel 14, driven by a motor 16, to pass therefrom to a wire accumulator 6 and thence to a spring coiling machine which draws the wire intermittently from the accumulator. The accumulator 6 comprises side panels spaced by end members 38, 39 and a partition 40, adjustable along slots 34, 36 in the side panels and locked in position by bolts 42. The front side panel may be of clear plastic. A tubular wire guide 52 is mounted on the partition 40. Switch contacts 55, 56, 57, 58 are engaged by the wire loop. If there is insufficient wire in the accumulator the loop lifts the contact 55 to open a switch 66 which stops the motor of the spring coiling machine. If the loop reaches a maximum predetermined amount the contact 58 opens a switch to stop the motor 16. Engagement of the contacts 56, 57 by the loop causes the motor 16 to run at a slower speed than when the contacts 56, 57 are not engaged by the loop. The speed of the motor 16 is adjustable manually. Contacts 56, 57 may be substituted by a single switch.
