Systems for continuous-current motors only; systems for controlling reciprocating motion.-In a system of control for a motor 3 operating a planer or similar machine, two electro-magnetically operated reversing-switches 9, 10 are so arranged that the operation of one provides for a shunt circuit round the winding of the other being completed when the appropriate push button is depressed. A switch 6 controls the resistance 5 and carries an auxiliary contact 8 in the holding circuit of each reversing-switch. To start the motor in the forward direction, the button 15 is depressed, and current then flows from lead 1 through coil 11, button 15, lower contacts of switch 10 to lead 2. The coil 11 closes the switch 9 to complete the motor circuit and, when the motor speed reaches a predetermined value, the switch 6 rises to short circuit the starting resistance 5. A holding circuit for the switch 9 is established through the contacts 13, 8. With these connexions, the switch 10 cannot be closed by depression of the button 16 as the button and the coil 12 are shunted by the lead 18 and the closed contacts of the switch 9. Similar connexions are made by the switch 10 when the motor runs in the reverse direction. In a modification, interlocking contacts in parallel with the buttons 15, 16 are attached to the switch 6 and are employed instead of the contacts 13, 14. The push button 17 opens the circuit of the coil 7 of the switch 6 to stop the motor.
