Abstract

In a pump which includes a plunger assembly 13, comprising a plunger 14, a plunger rod 15 and a plunger head 19, the assembly being slidable in a barrel 10 between an inner position (as shown) and an outer or extended position, to which latter position the assembly is urged by a spring 16, a plate 17 is located adjacent that end of the barrel from which the plunger rod protrudes and is formed with an aperture through which the plunger head can pass, stop means being provided for retaining the plunger head 19 between the plate 17 and the barrel end. The plunger head and the aperture in plate 17 may both be non-circular, e. g. hexagonal, so that the plunger may be moved to its inner position, when the head is aligned with the aperture, and retained therein by rotating the plunger head relative to the plate, the edges of the head then abutting the plate, as shown. Alternatively, one or more fingers mounted on the plate may be extendable over the aperture to form the stop means. In this case, the head and the aperture may be circular.
