Abstract
a -olefins are polymerized by conventional low pressure techniques in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound MAl2H7 where M = alkali metal, a halide of a Group IVB, VB or VIB metal with a valency one less than maximum and, optionally as a third component, an alkali metal hydride or a Group II metal oxide. Monomers exemplified are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, heptene-1, decene-1, 3 methyl - 1 - butene, 4 methyl - 1 - butene, styrene, a - methyl - 1 - butene, 4 - methyl - 1 - hexene, 5 - methyl - 1 - hexene, 4,4-dimethyl - 1 - butene, allylcyclohexene allylcyclobutene, allylbenzene; the copolymerization of propylene and butene-1 is described in Examples 14 and 15.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula MAl2H7 where M is an alkali metal. LiAlH7 and NaAlH7 are exemplified. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by contacting a hydride R2AlH, where R is a hydrocarbon radical free of non-aromatic unsaturation, with an alkali metal hydride MH in molar ratio 2 : 1 to 1 : 2 in an inert solvent at 25-200 DEG C. under N2 and recovering crystalline MAl2H7.ALSO:Alkali metal dialuminium heptahydrides, MAl2H7 (see Division Cl) may be used as reducing agents in hydrocarbon solution at - 80 DEG to 150 DEG C. for the functional groups of ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and esters, nitriles and nitro compounds, usually without reduction of any olefinic double bonds present.
