Abstract
A therapeutic composition having antidepressant properties contains as essential active ingredients (a) 7-chloro-2-methylamino-5-phenyl-3H-1, 4-benzodiazepine 4-oxide (chlordiazepoxide) or a medicinally acceptable acid addition salt thereof and (b) 5-(3-dimethylamino-propylidene)-dibenzo [a, d] cyclohepta [1, 4] diene (amitriptyline) or a medicinally acceptable acid addition salt thereof. Ingredient (a) may be present in the form of a salt with hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric, benzoic, citric, malic, maleic, tartaric or salicylic acid and ingredient (b) may be present in the form of a salt with hydrochloric, hydrobromic, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric, acetic, benzoic, lactic, malic, maleic or salicylic acid; preferably (a) is in the free base form and (b) is in the form of a salt with hydrochloric acid. The compositions, which may contain conventional adjuvants or exipients, can be administered orally or parenterally in the form of tablets, solutions, syrups, oily suspensions or capsules.
