Abstract

1,112,445. Controlling continuous polymerization melt-spinning processes for polyesters. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 11 Aug., 1965 [12 Aug., 1964], No. 34307/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division G3] In a continuous polyester polymerization melt-spinning process the throughput and residence time in the polymerization reactor are maintained constant, thus preventing undesired variations in intrinsic viscosity of the product, and variations in throughput of the spinneret assemblies that might occur, e.g. by taking some of them out of commission, are avoided by varying the rate of extrusion through the individual spinnerets. Constant denier is maintained by varying the draw-off rate in a manner corresponding to the extrusion rate. The temperature of the cooling air is also varied in accordance with the extrusion and draw-off rate. Automatic control may be used. Residence time in the reactor system 1, 2, 3 is determined by the level of melt in the final reactor 3. This is sensed at 22 and a signal sent to means for adjusting the ratio of the drive 26 between a synchronous motor 25 and a generator 27 supplying motors driving the pumps 11 for the spinnerets 13 of which four sets of four may be in use. The drive is also taken through a variable gear 28 (which determines the denier of the extended filament) to generator 29 supplying motors driving the draw-off rolls 15. Increase in polymer level in reactor 3, arising, e.g. from shutting down a set of spinnerets, increases the extrusion and draw-off rates, thus tending to restore the level to its former value. The temperature of the cooling air supplied at 16 to the shaft 14 is controlled automatically at 20 by a valve in the steam line 17 to the heat exchanger 18. Examples are given of extruding a polymer from terephthalic acid and 1,4- dimethylol viscosity from the desired value of 0À82 with and without the control system of the invention.
