[Also in Division B3] A holding device comprises a plurality of magnetic elements each of the form shown in Fig. 1, the elements being arranged so that the sum of the areas of the adhesion surfaces of the cores 1 is equal to the sum of the areas of the adhesion surfaces of the surrounding parts 2 and m # d/4. Each element.includes a winding contained in a milled annular slot, the winding being used to energize the device or, in the case of a permanent magnet device, to oppose the flux. Fig. 5 shows a cubical work-holder which can be positioned in the corner of a workpiece. In Fig. 7, each element 2 is provided with perforated strips enabling them to be disposed for engagement with a non-planar workpiece. Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) relate to arrangements of cylindrical or hexagonal magnetic elements on a flexible base of wire netting supported by a rubber cushion. Fig. 11 shows a further arrangement for use with non-planar workpieces, the elements 2 being articulated to each other at 23. Fig. 6 (not shown) depicts a rotatable work-table having perforations to receive pegs formed in the base of a plurality of magnetic elements 2. Fig. 13 shows a lifting magnet 27 having a winding 26 and provided with a plurality of magnetic elements 2 capable of gripping small or thin plates which would not pass the flux of the main magnet 27. In Fig. 15 (not shown) a lifting magnet comprises an assembly of magnetic elements and an energizing accumulator arranged to be attached to a crane hook. A positioning handle includes control switches for the magnetic elements.
