A mechanical device for laying floor-covering tiles comprises a frame consisting of two parallel rails joined at their ends by two U-tubes serving as a handle and mounted on four legs having mechanical jacks, a grid mounted between the legs secured to L-shaped arms sliding on the legs on which they are locked by screws, a distributer carriage containing the tiles to be laid and which is manually displaced, disposed between the rails and supported thereby through rollers. In Fig. 3 the carriage comprises a succession of tubes 11 in which the tiles are stacked flat one upon the other, the bottom of each shaft being formed with a slot 13 and one of the lateral faces of the shaft perpendicular to the direction of displacement of the carriage not extending as far as the bottom so as to leave an aperture 14 having the thickness of the tile, the other face being formed in prolongation of the bottom slot 13 with an aperture 15. The grid 6 comprises stops 16 disposed on cross-pieces 17 so as to extend through the aperture 15 into the slot 13 of each tube and thus to urge the tile through aperture 14 and to cause it to drop on to the floor through grid 6 when the carriage 9 is displaced. The grid 6 is adjusted vertically such that the bottom of the tubes 11 passes level with the grid 6 during the displacement of the carriage. To facilitate the placing in position on the floor of the frame, a guiding grid 18 comprising cells which are intended to receive each tile is placed on the floor, and the legs are provided at their ends with a plate having the shape of the tile to be laid which is inserted in a cell of the guide grid 18. After laying and levelling cement on the floor, the guide grid 18 is placed in position and the device is placed on the guide grid so that the four plates on the legs are engaged in each corner cell of the guide grid. After loading the tubes 11 with tiles, levelling the grid 6 relatively to the guide grid 18 with the aid of the levelling jacks, the carriage is pushed towards the front of frame to enable the stops 16 to cause a tile to drop into a cell of grid 18 each time the carriage travels on a crosspiece 17 of the grid 6. When the tubes 11 of the carriage reach the end of travel they are empty, and the operation is repeated adjacent the covered surface.
