Abstract
Homopolymers of aziridines containing the recurring unit <FORM:1111827/C3/1> where n is 0 to 4 are obtained by polymerization of the appropriate N-allylaziridines in the presence of an acid or an acidic salt capable of opening the aziridine ring. The polymers can be further reacted through the allylic groups to give cross-linked products. Example 12 describes the polymerization of N-allylaziridine in the presence of dilute HCl. Other specified monomers are N-methallyl- and N-ethallylaziridine.ALSO:N-allylaziridines are prepared by reacting at least one mole of an aziridine having a replaceable imino hydrogen atom with one mole of an allylic halide of the formula <FORM:1111827/C2/1> where R1-3 are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups and X is Cl, Br or I, in a polar solvent and in at least 1 mol of a strong base per mol of allylic halide. A polar solvent is defined as a solvent having a dielectric constant of at least 5 at 20 DEG C., e.g. water, nitrobenzene, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide and lower alkanols. By a strong base is meant any base which can be used in the general reaction between a secondary amine and an alkyl halide, e.g. hydroxides, oxides and alkoxides of alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals, ammonina and tertiary amines. Specified aziridines include those substituted on one or more carbon atoms by methyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl and benzyl groups. The polar solvent may be provided by excess aziridine or by the tertiary amine which is employed as the strong base. Examples relate to the preparation of N-allyl-and N-methallyl-aziridines. The aziridines can be polymerized to polyethylene-imines (see Division C3).
