Abstract

1,111,618. Shaft seals. WORTHINGTONSIMPSON Ltd. 5 July, 1965 [17 July, 1964], No. 29232/64. Heading F2B. In a vertically mounted centrifugal pump for handling corrosive liquids or liquids containing abrasive particles the shaft seal 16 is separated from the impeller 12 by a chamber 1 to which the liquid has access and which is supplied with gas under pressure from an external source so as to maintain the level of the liquid below the shaft seal. Inert gas, which may be nitrogen, is supplied to the chamber 1 at a higher pressure than that of the liquid through a pipe 17 and regulator valve 2 and the level of the liquid is maintained constant by the gas being able to escape from the chamber 1 through a vent 3 connected to the liquid supply tank 4 or to an exhaust pipe 37. The shaft seal 16 is a double mechanical seal and is housed in a chamber 5 containing sealing liquid, which may be oil, at a pressure not less than the pressure in the chamber 1. The latter may be connected to the chamber 5 by a pipe 20. The pump shaft 13 is driven by an electric motor 15. The liquid level in the chamber 1 may be controlled by a level regulating device, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprising a float (23) responsive to changes of liquid level to operate valves (25, 26) controlling the admission or exhaust of gas to or from the chamber 1. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seal is contained in a housing (7) through which sealing liquid from a reservoir (8) is circulated by helical grooves (9a) on the seal spring carrier (9). A heat exchanger (33) is incorporated in the return line from the housing (7).
