Abstract

1,111,362. Bearings. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 4 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 474/67. Heading F2A. A damping centring bearing for a vertical shaft B, Fig. 1, has a stationary casing 4 having a bore 6 therein which forms a recess coaxial with the shaft B; a damping element 10 comprising a sleeve 12 with an anti-friction lining 13 of P.T.F.E. for example, and a radiallyoutwardly directed flange 14 provided with layers 16, 18 of anti-friction material; a disc 20, made of steel for example, which is urged by a spring-washer 22 towards a flat surface 8 of the recess formed in the casing 4; and has a resilient ring 24, of rubber for example, which is secured to the periphery of the flange 14 of the damping element 10 and which abuts the bore 6 of the casing 4. The compression of the spring- washer 22 is adjusted by means of a screwthreaded ring 26 which is received into a tapped bore 28 of the casing 4, the ring 26 being locked in position by a looking-sorew 30. Heat which is evolved is removed by the contacting surfaces of the damping element 10 and the casing 4. In a modification, a resilient ring 24<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is interposed between a member 14<SP>1</SP> and a sleeve 12<SP>1</SP>; and metallic braiding 32 forms a heat-bridge between the sleeve 12<SP>1</SP> and a casing 4<SP>1</SP>. A disc brake pad assembly comprises at least one pad 15 of brake lining material bonded to a sheet 17 which is compressible in a direction normal to the working face of the pad(s) 15 and is substantially inextensible in a direction parallel to the working face of the pad(s). In the construction shown the sheet 17 is of woven brake lining material. The sheet and pad assembly is releasably attached to a shoe-plate 10 by a plurality of studs 11 arranged in spaced apart pairs along the length of the shoe-plate (Fig. 1, not shown) and each pair having aligned apertures. Wires 13 are passed through the aligned aperture, the wires being forced into grooves 18 in the sheet 17 to hold it firmly against the shoe-plate.
