Abstract

111,134. Roberts, W. F. Nov. 10, 1916. Gearing-cutting.-A machine for cutting double - helical and straight gears comprises a cutter saddle 20 reciprocated on a standard 10 bv a pulley 22 through gearing 23 - - 28, 33. 31, 32, 21, and nuts 29, 30. The cutter spindles 34, 35 are driven from the same end, and one passes through the other with a slight clearance to allow of a small canting movement of the spindles relatively to their driving- gears 42, 43, which are connected to the spindles by flexible connexions 44, 45. The spindle 34 and its driving-gear are carried by an auxiliary saddle 97 adjustably mounted on the saddle 20. The lower cutter 36 is preferably mounted on a short conical mandrel 39 detachably clutched to the end of the spindle 35, and the upper cutter 37 is mounted on the mandrel-shaped end of the spindle 34. In order to permit of the setting up of the cutters and of their release movements during the return strokes, the lower bearing blocks 41. 50 are made adjustable by providing them with curved grooves 52 engaging the curved faces of adapter blocks 91, of which the other ends engage straight grooves in the supporting lugs of the bearings. Eccentrics 92 on the spindles 55, 56 work in lugs 93 on the bearing blocks and move the blocks when cranks 57, 58 on the spindles 55, 56 are actuated by solenoids 59, 60, or by mechanical means, at the end of the movements of the saddle 20, thereby releasing the cutter which has finished its cut and bringing the other into cutting position. The lower cutter may be adjusted to enter the blank to the same depth as the upper cutter by connecting the arm 57 to the spindle 55 through a worm working with a worm-wheel on the end of the spindle, and providing a micrometer head on the worm. The worms 46, 47 driving the spindles 34, 35 are actuated from a spindle 78 through bevels 79, 80. The continuous rotation corresponding to the rotation of the blank 15 is imparted to the spindles from the shaft 17 through gear-wheels 83 - - 86, spindle 37, a worm on the shaft 87 and a worm-wheel on a differential gear 81 driving the spindle 78. The additional turning movement of the cutters corresponding to the angle of the gear teeth to be cut is effected by the shaft 33 driving through worm gearing a shaft 71, which drives a shaft 76 through a gear-train 72 - - 75. The oscillating shaft 76 controls the spindle 78 through bevels 77 and the lower member of the differential gear 81. By using change-gear in the train 72 - - 75, the pitch-angle of the teeth cut may be varied. Straight gears may he cut by using straight-toothed cutters, while the differential feed through the shaft 76 is thrown out of action and the lower member of the differential gear is locked. The blank 15 is driven by the shaft 17 through worm gear, and the table carrying it is slidably mounted. The reciprocating parts of the apparatus may be counter-balanced
