Abstract
Novel substituted aralkyl alcohols of the formula <FORM:1111337/C2/1> where one of R2 and R3 is a group -OR7, R7 and R1 being hydrogen, alkyl, o -dialkylaminoalkyl or heterocyclic-substituted alkyl, not both of them being hydrogen, R4 and R5 and the other of R2 and R3 are hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl or halogen, R6 is naphthyl, phenyl, halo- and/or alkyl-substituted phenyl and Y is a carbon-carbon bond or a group containing carbon and hydrogen only, at least one of R4 R5, the other of R2 and R3 to -OR7 and th substituents on R6 being other than hydrogen if Y contains less than 2 carbon atoms and acid addition salts thereof are produced by the partial reduction of the corresponding ketone. The reduction is suitably effected by KBH4 in ethanol. Preferably R1 and R7 are b -diethyl-aminoethyl groups, and exemplified compounds have Y as -C2H4-, -C3H6-, and -C4H8-groups, or R6 as p-chlorophenyl and Y as a carbon-carbon bond. Pharmaceutical preparations having amoebicidal activity comprise the above compounds with conventional pharmaceutical carriers and diluents.
