Abstract
Copolymers of 20 to 79 weight per cent of ethylene, 20 to 79 weight per cent of vinyl acetate and 1 to 20 weight per cent of hydrocarbons of formula <FORM:1111222/C3/1> where R1 and R11 are hydrogen or alkyl groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers at elevated pressure in the presence of a radical polymerization catalyst, the reaction being terminated before complete conversion. The preferred hydrocarbon is norbornadiene-2,5. Polymerization may be effected in a homogeneous liquid phase, e.g. in excess monomer, t.-butanol optionally containing water in compatible amounts, and hydrocarbons; or in aqueous dispersion. Specified catalysts are lauroyl, acetyl, benzoyl, dichlorobenzoyl peroxides, peroxydicarbonates, azodiisobutyronitrile and molecular oxygen. The polymerization may be stopped by adding crotonaldehyde, or by adding the reaction mixture to excess methanol. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene, vinyl acetate and norbornadiene-2,5 in t.-butanol in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile. The products may be vulcanized.
