Abstract
111,080. Dunham, W. P. Nov. 10, 1916, [Convention date]. Block paving.-Relates to street paving which is formed from sections or units each comprising a metal tray filled with asphalt, and consists in providing the units with bolts projecting downwards to engage with anchor blocks sunk in the road foundation. Fig. 4 shows a pavement formed of standard sections each comprising a metal tray 5 filled with paving-material 3, the sections being bolted to conical anchoring-plugs 14 in the foundation 1 by screw locking-bolts S. two forms of which are shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6. The spaces between the sections, and if necessary the bolt holes, are filled in with the paving material 16. The bolts are permanently attached to the corners of each section and serve to raise the sections when the pavement is renewed. In the form shown in Fig. 5, each bolt is retained in the section by a collar 9 having a pin 11 engaging a slot 10 in the bolt so that the bolt can be unscrewed from the plug 14 and raised to the dotted-line position, the section being then lifted by means engaging the grooves 13 on the bolts. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the bolt is in two parts and the section is raised by unscrewing the bolts. The trays 5 may be bottomless or the bottom may be of web formation. The sections may be reinforced by metal embedded in the paving material. In a modification, the trays are interlocked by tongues which extend from one side of the metal tray and rest upon the adjacent side of the next tray.
