Abstract

1,110,703. Blow-moulding articles of stress crack-prone plastic. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 1 July, 1965 [8 July, 1964], No. 27946/65. Heading B5A. In a blow-moulding process, the parison may be preformed or injected or impacted on a mandrel. Articles of stress crack-prone plastics, e.g. polystyrene are produced by forming the parison of the plastics in which the molecules have a high degree of multiaxial orientation, placing it on a mandrel having blowing means, inserting in a blow-mould and blowing the parison at 110-140‹ C. The parison may be formed on the mandrel and blown while still hot from the forming step, or allowed to cool, placed on a mandrel having heating and blowing means, rapidly heated thereby before blowing to a temperature high enough to enable blowing but not too high to cause relaxation of the orientation of the molecules in the parison. The required orientation is obtained by rotating one of the die elements past the fill point of the die cavity, i.e. the stage when the desired amount of material has been added while forming the parison by injection-moulding, or in impact moulding by rotating one of the die elements during and after the impact stroke while the plastic solidifies. A torque of 750- 2200 1b. may be applied while forming the parison. The apparatus may comprise a mould having a cavity of the desired shape, a mandrel for receiving the parison, the mould having an opening to receive the mandrel and parison and the mandrel having means to heat and blow the parison. These means preferably controllably heat the mandrel wall and thereby the inside of the parison, and an oven, having an orifice to fit the mandrel and parison, may be used to radiantly heat the outside of the parison, e.g. by passing an electric current through resistance wire wound around a tubular support, concentric with the mandrel. Such heating will avoid relaxation of the molecular orientation. There may be a plurality of these ovens mounted on a table support, with a parison supply station and a blow-moulding station, and a plurality of mandrels mounted on a vertically movable turntable to grasp parisons from supply, reheat in the ovens, and mould them by blowing.
