Vehicular lanterns.-In an automobile or like headlight, the source of light is positioned with respect to the focus of the reflector so as to obtain a concentrated horizontal beam with a slight divergence, the rays of light from approximately one half of the reflector being reflected horizontally or downwardly whilst those rays from the other half of the reflector, which would otherwise be projected upwardly, are deflected downwardly by refracting-means interposed in their path after they strike the reflector. In one form, the refracting-means comprise horizontally disposed prisms 112, Fig. 3, arranged on the upper part of the lantern front and extending in some cases below the lamp bulb. The V-shaped or conical light source 122 is arranged behind the focus of a paraboloidal reflector P with its apex in the focus, and the centre of the lamp bulb is behind the filament. A depending reflecting or non-reflecting apron 113 having horizontal extensions 114 on each side of the lamp bulb prevents light, which radiates horizontally, from being reflected upwardly. In a modification, the prisms 103, Fig. 2, are arranged concentrically, and the intermediate part of the glass front may be frosted as shown at 106. In the same modification, the lower leg of the V.shaped light source is arranged along the axis of the reflector. In a second form, the source of light is in front of the focus of the reflector instead of behind it, and the prisms are arranged on the lower instead of the upper part of the glass front, the apron extending upwardly instead of downwardly.
