Abstract

1,110,120. Grinding. CLEVELAND FROG & CROSSING CO. 28 Sept., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 43272/66. Heading B3D. Apparatus for turning billets comprises a frame to the opposite sides of which are pivoted billet supporting arms 36, 37, Figs. 1, 2, 3, which are movable by telescopic hydraulic rams 40, 41 between a horizontal position as shown and a lowered position. The billets are supported on two such apparatuses 16, 17 for grinding by the wheel W of a grinding-machine M which is movably supported on rails C. Further such apparatuses may be provided intermediate the apparatuses 16, 17 and other suitable intermediate supports may be provided. Each frame comprises base members 20 and upright transverse plates 22 . . . 24 formed with recesses providing sloping edges 31, 32 and a horizontal lower edge 30. Each arm 36, 37 comprises spaced plates having a T-shaped wear plate 44 removably supported therebetween, and has a pivot pin 45 supported in bearing blocks 46. Two upwardly extending clamp arms 55, 56 are pivotally supported on the frame by pivot pins 57, 58 supported in bearing blocks 59, 60 and each comprises spaced plates supporting therebetween a T-shaped wear-plate 66. Each arm 55, 56 is movable between outward and inward positions, shown in Fig. 3, by the respective positions of the arms, by a double-acting, telescopic, hydraulic ram 70, 73. An hydraulic system for operating the rams is described with reference to Fig. 14 (not shown). In operation, Figs. 6 ... 9 (not shown), the arms 36, 37 are at first horizontal and support a rectangular billet (B) so that a surface (B1) may be ground by the wheel W; the arms 55, 56 are disposed outwardly, or may be moved to clamp the billet. To present the surface (B2) to the wheel W the ram 40 of each apparatus is retracted to lower the arm 36 so that the billet is supported by the arm 37 which is then lowered to tilt the billet on to the arm 36. The latter is then raised whereby surface (B2) is uppermost. The billet (B) may be rotated in the opposite direction by the arm 37 being lowered before the arm 36 then raised when the billet has been tilted thereonto. The arms 55, 56 may be used to clamp the billet, to slide the billet laterally into position or to form stops to limit sliding of the billet when the arms 36, 37 are pivoted. The billet may be round or have more than four sides, the arms 36, 37 being lowered only sufficiently to turn the billet. The turning of a relatively flat billet is described with reference to Figs. 10 ... 13 (not shown). The billet (S1) is first supported on the horizontal arms 36, 37 with a broad side (S1) presented to the wheel W. The arms 36, 37 are then sequentially lowered to bring a narrow side (S4) to rest on the edge 30 of the frame and thereafter the arms 55, 56 are moved inwardly to clamp the billet with its other narrow side (S2) uppermost for grinding. The billet may then be tilted by movement of the arms 55, 56 so that it rests on the arm 36 which is then raised to present the other broad side S3 to the wheel W. Alternative movements of the arms are described for turning a billet. The apparatuses 16, 17 may be mounted on wheels for movement relative to each other along tracks, means being provided for locking the apparatuses in position on the tracks.
