Abstract

Infusible epoxide resins are made by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1110088/C3/1> wherein M is m- or p-phenylene (optionally mono- or di-substituted by halogen, nitro or C1- 5 alkyl), and R, R1 are C1- 5 alkyl, with a curing agent. Specified epoxides are those where M is unsubstituted m- or p-phenylene, and R, R1 are each methyl. In Example 5, the m-isomer is cured with one of the following:-oxalic, maleic, phthalic and pyromellitic acids; phthalic, trimellitic and pyromellitic(di-) anhydrides; LiH, Et4NOH and tri-N,N-dimethylaminomethylphenol. Other specified curing agents are 2 - dimethylaminomethylphenol, PhCHMeNMe2, PhCH2NMe2 and BF3-EtNH2ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formulae <FORM:1110088/C2/1> <FORM:1110088/C2/2> wherein M is m- or p-phenylene (optionally mono- or di-substituted by halogen, nitro or C1- 5 alkyl), R and R1 are C1- 5 alkyl, and Y is a halogen atom. The dihalohydrins, prepared by reacting the corresponding dialkenylbenzene with at least 2 mols hypohalous acid, may be converted to the diepoxides by reaction with at least 2 mols of strong base. In exemplified compounds, M is unsubstituted m- or p-phenylene, R and R1 are methyl and Y is Br.
