Abstract

Mono- or di-ethyl benzenes, or C4- 5 mono-olefins having a chain of at least 4 carbon atoms, are catalytically dehyrogenated to the corresponding vinyl benzenes or diolefins by passing a mixture thereof with steam into an axially placed perforated conduit and thence radially through an annular bed containing an auto-regenerable iron oxide-containing catalyst, the product stream being collected at the peripheral surface of the annular bed and subsequently quenched. The catalyst may also contain chromia and an alkali metal oxide or carbonate. An example describes the production of styrene.
