Abstract

In making a spandex polymer in filament form by extruding a solution of a spandex precursor into a coagulating bath containing a difunctional compound reactive with isocyanate groups, the precursor is made by reacting a linear hydroxyl-terminated polyester or polyether with an excess of a major proportion of OCN-R-NCO, wherein R is a divalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) radical and a minor proportion of OCN-R1-R2-R3-R2-R1-NCO, wherei R1 is a divalent organic radical, R2 is -NH-CO-NH-, -NH-NH-CO-, -NH-CO-O- or -NH-CO-, and R3 is a divalent h.c.. Suitable isocyanates of the second formula can be made by reacting 1 mol of HO-R3-OH with 2 mols of OCN-R1-NCO to yield OCN-R1-NH-CO-O-R3-O-CO-NH-R1-NCO. In examples, ethylene glycol and p,p1-diphenylmethane diisocyanate were heated together in dimethyl formamide to produce a mixture of 1 mol of <FORM:1109874/C3/1> and 1/2 mol of the diphenyl methane diisocyanate. Thi mixture and a further 2 mols of the original isocyanate were added to a linear hydroxy-terminated polyester made by heating ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and adipic acid, the reaction mixture was diluted with tetrahydrofuran and the solution was extruded into an isopropanol solution of ethylene diamine.
