A self-propelled compactor roller of the kind having a chassis with ballast carriers supported by hydraulic rams on front steerable wheels and rear driving wheels comprises on each side of the longitudinal axis of the chassis 10 a rigid assembly 20 which includes an engine 22, transmission 23 and an axle carrying a pair of the rear wheels 27, and is pivotally connected to the chassis 10 about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Each assembly 20 includes a frame 21 connected to the chassis 10 by a front pivotal connection 31 and a rear pivotal connection 32 which is displaceable vertically in guides 41, 42 by an hydraulic ram 37 to vary the vertical position of the rear wheels 27. Three steerable front wheels 16 are vertically positioned by hydraulic rams 17. The chassis 10 includes two parallel longitudinal girders 14 connected by transverse casings 11, 12 having provision for carrying ballast. Detachable ballast weights 45 are carried beneath the rear casing 12. A levelling blade 102 is adjusted vertically by an hydraulic ram 103. Each transmission 23 includes a torque converter and change-speed gearing connected to the wheels 27 through bevel gearing 28 and reduction gearing 30. The wheels 27 may alternatively be driven through a creeper drive comprising hydraulic motors 106, 107 supplied from a pump 105 driven by one engine 22. A pump 108 or generator driven by the other engine 22 supplies an hydraulic or electric motor which drives a vibrating plate (not shown). The front wheels 16 are steered by any one of two pairs of control wheels 90 arranged to facilitate driving in either direction from either side of a driving cab 40. Two control boxes 92 which are each positioned adjacent a respective pair of control wheels 90 and each arranged to control one engine 22 are interconnectable so that both engines can be controlled simultaneously from either box 92. Two brake pedals on each side of the cab 40 each actuate a disc brake on one assembly 20 and may be depressed simultaneously or separately to assist steering.
