Abstract

A process for producing electrically conductive carbon elements comprises passing a mixture of carbon particles and a binder which is thermally convertible to carbon through a chamber containing two mutually insulated electrodes in electrical contact with the mixture by means capable of exerting pressure on the mixture and insulated from earth, the terminal portion of the chamber having the same cross-section as the desired cross-section of the carbon elements, passing an electric current through the electrodes and the portion of the mixture therebetween to raise the temperature of the mixture to the coking temperature of the binder, and advancing the resultant bonded material out of the chamber. The carbon particles may be coke and the binder pitch. The temperature to which the mixture is heated may exceed 1200 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,047,137.
