Abstract

1,109,484. Controlling gradation. FUJI SHASHIN FILM KABUSHIKI KAISHA. April 7, 1965 [April 8, 1964], No. 14853/65. Headings G2A and G2C. In photographic printing, in which the density of the printed image depends on the product of the light intensity and the exposure time, the gradation is controlled by varying the exposure time inversely with the intensity so that an image of the desired density and gradation is obtained. The exposure time is from 1 to 0À01 sec., or less. Thus various gradations can be obtained from one kind of printing paper, avoiding the necessity for providing different papers of varying degrees of hardness or softness. Fig. 2 shows a suitable apparatus. A light source 1 is controlled from a power supply 2, and the light passes through a condenser lens 6, negative 7, an objective lens 8 and iris diaphragm 9 to the printing paper 10. Also in the light path are a step wedge 4 and a shutter 3. Wedge 4 controls the light intensity, and shutter 3 the exposure time. These are varied inversely with respect to each other by means of a gradation selector 5, adjusted after inspection of the negative to give the required gradation and density. Alternatively the selector 5 may couple the wedge 4 and power supply 2 to provide inverse variation of intensity and time, in which case the shutter 3 may be omitted.
