Abstract

Particles of photoconductors are coated with a continuous layer of resin having an electrical specific resistance above 1013 Ohm. cm. The photoconductor is preferably ZnO but may also be, for example, an oxide of antimony, aluminium, bismuth, cadmium, mercury, molybdenum or lead. The resin may be a hydrophobic resin. Specified are silicone resins, polymers of styrene, vinyl esters, preferably vinyl butyral, vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, with which, if desired, a small proportion of a carboxylic acid, for example acrylic or maleic acid, may have been polymerized. The coating is supplied by mixing the particles with a solution of the resin, filtering and drying the residue.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of an electrophotographic material by coating a support with a resin layer containing particles of a photo-conductor and solidifying the said resin layer, comprising the particles of photoconductor are first coated with a continuous layer of a resin having an electrical specific resistance above 1013 Ohm. cm. and then making a preparation from the photoconductor thus pretreated and a resin acting as a binder in an aqueous medium that does not dissolve the resin coating of the photoconductor, and then applying the aqueous preparation to a support. The resin having a specific resistance above 1013 Ohm. cm. may be a hydrophobic resin. Examples are polymers of styrene, vinyl esters, preferably vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride with which, if desired, a small proportion of a carboxylic acid, for example acrylic or maleic acid may have been copolymerized. Such polymers can be dissolved, for example, in acetone. Silicone resins which are soluble in toluene are also specified. The binder may be a resin that contains carboxylic acid groups. These polymers should be of a nature such that they are soluble in water at least in the form of their alkali metal or ammonium salts. Suitable polymerizable carboxylic acids are crotonic, methacrylic, chloracylic, acrylic and maleic acids which may be co-polymerised with for example acrylic acid esters, vinyl esters of lower carboxylic acids, e.g. vinyl acetate, and vinyl chloride or styrene. Photoconductors specified are the oxides of antimony, aluminium, bismuth, cadmium, mercury, molybdenum, lead and zinc. The photoconductor particles have a size of preferably below 1u. 0.1% to 5%, based on the weight of the photoconductor, of the following elements or a compound thereof may be added singly or in an admixture with each other; boron, thallium, lithanium, lead, cobalt or silver. When a water-soluble resin is used as a binder, there may be added to the preparation substances which on being heated render the resin water-insoluble by forming insoluble polyamides. Such substances are compounds of hexavalent chromium, for example ammonium bichromate and amines which are non-volatile at temperatures up to 120 DEG C. containing at least two reactive amino groups. The support may be of paper and may be coated on both sides.
