Abstract

The passage of each drip in a drip feed apparatus is detected by a photo-cell the output of which is integrated to produce a signal which is compared with a desired drip rate signal so that any difference is effective to correct the rate of drip. As applied to blood transfusion apparatus on a wheeled stand, a glass bottle of blood having an air vent is supported in an inverted position so that blood passes to a dispenser through a filter, a drip chamber having transparent walls, and a tube which is squeezed by a motor operated clamp. Light is reflected backwards and forwards to cover the cross-section of the drip chamber so that drops of blood, however they fall, produce output pulses from a photo-cell which are amplified, squared, and integrated to produce a direct voltage representative of the rate of drip. This voltage is compared with a manually selected voltage representing a desired rate of drip and any error is effective to control a switch and operate the reversible motor which corrects the rate of drip by adjustment of the clamp in the appropriate sense. A drip counter and rate indicator are provided and an alarm may be operated when drip rate or amount of blood in the bottle fall below predetermined values.
