Abstract

Fuel element failure in a pressurized gascooled nuclear reactor using ceramic fuel is tested for by monitoring at 14 the bulk outlet gas from the reactor core and when excessive fission products are detected, manually connecting a conduit from point 7 to the outlet of each fuel element channel in turn, and monitoring at 15 the coolant gas from each channel to identify any one containing a failed fuel element. The arrangement shown includes two reactor change faces 1, 2 and flexible hoses 5, 6 which may be connected from points 7, 8 to any of the tubes 3, 4 which are in communication with the outlets of the coolant gas channels. The gas flows via conduit 12 to indicator and recorder 15. The flexible hoses may be replaced by movable assemblies of telescopic tubes. Additional conduits 27, 34 and cross-over valve 28, together with second point 7<SP>1</SP> and flexible hose 5<SP>1</SP>, enable the conduits to be purged while another channel is being tested.
