Abstract
A silicone-modified polyester paint-binder resin is prepared by heating neopentyl glycol, xylene, and hydroxy-functional, cyclic polysiloxane of specified properties at 325 DEG to 350 DEG F. for two hours, whereafter maleic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and dibutyl tin oxide are added and the temperature kept at 325 DEG F. for one hour. The temperature is then increased to 425 DEG F., the xylene stripped off, and the temperature maintained until the acid number is about 25. A vacuum is pulled to about 5-10mm. mercury, hydroquinone added when the acid number is less than about 10, the charge cooled to 180 DEG to 190 DEG F., and styrene is finally added. The resin may be sprayed upon metal plates and cured by electron irradiation (see Division H1).
