Abstract

Novel compounds of the formulae <FORM:1108979/C2/1> and <FORM:1108979/C2/2> (wherein R1 is lower, i.e. C1- 6, alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, benzoyl, nitro-benzoyl, carboxy-lower alkanoyl, carboxy-benzoyl, trifluoro-acetyl or camphorsulphonyl; and T1 is -CX = CH-, -C(OR3) = CH- or -Q1-CH2, X being Cl, Br or I, R3 being lower alkyl, and Q1 being carbonyl, lower alkylene-dioxy - methylene, di - lower alkoxy - methylene or hydroxy-methylene) and optical antipodes and racemates thereof, and the novel-1 - [1b - tetrahydropyranyloxy - 7ab - methyl 5 - oxo - 3aa , 4a , 5, 6, 7, 7a - hexahydroindanyl - (4)] - pentanone - (3) cyclic ethylene ketal are prepared by hydrogenation in the presence of a noble metal catalyst of the corresponding 5,6,7,7a-tetrahydroindanes which are described in Specification 1,108,978. Hydrogenation results in a mixture containing as the main components the 3aa , 4a , 5, 6, 7, 7a-hexahydro compounds and the corresponding 3ab , 4b -stereoisomers. The former are epimerized to the required 3aa , 4b , 5, 6, 7, 7a-hexahydro-indanes by treatment with acid or base. Resolved starting materials may be used or the products may themselves be resolved by standard procedures.
