Abstract

Polyethylene is made by contacting ethylene with a catalyst complex consisting of the reaction product of a poly(hydrocarbylaluminium oxide) containing units of the formula <FORM:1108789/C3/1> and a transition metal compound of Groups IVA, VA, and VIA of the Periodic Table, where R is an alkyl or aryl radical and wherein the mole ratio of transition metal to aluminium in the complex is at least 1:30, and an oligomer retardant present in a concentration of from 1 to 1500 parts per million of the reaction mixture, which is (a) a butadiene compound of the formula <FORM:1108789/C3/2> where R11 is hydrogen, halogen, an alkoxy group containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an aryl group, or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R111 is hydrogen, an aryl group, or alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein either R11 or R111 is hydrogen, (b) cyclohexadiene-1,3 or (c) 3-ethylidenecyclohexane. The Specification contains lists of suitable catalyst components. Exemplified components are poly(isobutylaluminium oxide), chromic 2-ethyl-hexanoate, and butadiene, cyclohexadiene - 1,3, 2 - methoxybutadiene-1,3, chlorobutadiene - 1,3, pentadiene - 1,3, and 2-tertiary butylbutadiene-1,3.
