Abstract

Composite ceramic bodies are prepared by mixing whisker crystals of alumina e.g. sapphire with a bonding matrix of one or more powdered calcium aluminates, the melting point of the matrix being lower than that of the whiskers heating to melt the matrix e.g. to 1500 DEG C. for 5 mins and allowing the mixture to cool and solidify. The matrix may have the formula 5CaO.3Al2O3. Bonding may be improved by employing a matrix that is stoiciometrically deficient in aluminium oxide.
