A central station and a plurality of outstations are connected in series in a closed loop, each station has a shift register which is coupled to the shift registers of the adjacent stations, and the number of stages in the central station register is equal to the sum of the numbers of stages in the outstation registers, whereby in one complete shift cycle, information is transferred from different parts of the central station register to respective outstation registers through the preceding outstation registers, and information is at the same time transferred from the different outstation registers, through the following outstation registers to the corresponding parts of the central station register. At the end of a shift cycle, detected by counting the shift pulses, a transfer pulse is generated to transfer information from the central station register to indicator relays and to enter new information into the register if desired. An integrator is included in the read-out circuit to prevent actuation of the indicator relays until the same information has been applied thereto in a number of successive shift cycles. The transfer pulse is also sent to the outstations to effect data entry and/or read-out from the respective registers for monitoring and/or control purposes.
