Abstract
A semi-crystalline glass article has a coefficient of expansion of not greater than 20 x 10-7/ DEG C. and comprises, as analytical components, SiO2, Al2O3, Li2O, a small amount of a nucleating agent which at least includes ZrO2 and from substantially 8 to 14% by weight of a fluxing agent which includes B2O3 and the metal oxides MgO and/or ZnO, the said article containing b -spodumene crystals of the Li2O, Al2O3, SiO2 system, these crystals being embodied in a glassy matrix comprising Al2O3, SiO2 and the fluxing agent. The glass is taken from the range SiO2 58 to 66, Al2O3 16 to 22, Li2O 2.5 to 5, B2O3 4-7, MgO and/or ZnO 3-7, and contains up to 4 TiO2 and 0.6, ZrO2 as nucleating agent. The glass is melted at 2800 DEG F. and conventionally formed into articles at 2200 DEG to 2500 DEG F. The ware is cooled and then reheated to 1600-1800 DEG F. for from 1 to 14 hours to allow for nucleation. The longer time is used for decorated ware. Articles made from the above composition by the above method contained 37.4% crystals (b -spodumene) and had a coefficient of expansion of 13 x 10-7/ DEG C. a typical composition of the glassy matrix remaining was SiO2 66.86, Al2O3 16.38, B2O3 9.72, MgO 6.00 and ZrO2 1.03.
