Abstract

1,107,711. Bearings. CLERK, KING, POYNTER & CO. Ltd. 17 June, 1965 [17 March, 1964], No. 11232/64. Heading E2A. An oil-stabilized gas bearing is provided with oil-grooves 3, Fig. 2, adjacent each end thereof, the grooves being supplied with oil at a pressure greater than the gas pressure so that a liquid seal is effected; and is provided with a bore which is relieved at its lower portion by a sector 4, Fig. 1, and at its upper portion by sectors 6 and 8. Sector 4 may extend 160 degrees, sector 6 may extend 80 degrees and sector 8 may extend 75 degrees and the depth of the sectors may be 2À5 per cent of the shaft diameter. The oil-grooves 3 are connected to axial-grooves 5, 9 and 11 by micro-grooves; and drain-grooves 2, Fig. 2, and 10, Fig. 1, are provided. Pressurized-air is supplied to the sector 4 at 13 and 14 and to the sectors 6 and 8 via an axial groove 7 and micro-grooves. Air escapes from the sector 4 at 12 and passes, through a capilliary drain and a constant-pressure valve, back to the axial groove 7 and escapes from the sectors 6 and 8 at points 15 and 16. In a modification, pressurized-oil is supplied to the sectors 6 and 8 via the axial groove 7.
