In a system for automatically synchronizing a cine film projector with sound recordings on tape, a synchronizing signal recorded on the tape is compared with a signal dependent on movement of the shutter of the projector. As described, a photo-transistor responsive to light influenced by a projector or camera shutter, or a commutator on a camera drive shaft, produces a pulse output which is amplified, squared, differentiated, and divided to modulate a transistor oscillator energizing a separate head of a multi-track recorder on which the sound recordings are made. Then, during reproduction, switches are operated manually so that the oscillator becomes an amplifier of the synchronizing signals from the tape which repeatedly set a flip-flop circuit to one state after the pulses derived from projector flicker set it to the other state. The relative times for which the flip-flop is in one state or the other control through a blocking oscillator the average conductivity of a silicon-controlled rectifier regulating the speed of the projector motor to maintain synchronism. Operation of a push-button controlled transistor-operated relay ensures that the supply to the projector motor is switched off until the first pulse arrives from the tape so that the apparatus starts correctly in synchronism. A rectifier and meter associated with the flicker-produced pulses indicates pulses per second and hence projector speed. A transistor circuit is provided to ensure that the projector motor is not stalled if the synchronizing pulses fail.
