Abstract

Acrylic or methacrylic acids are prepared by reacting acrolein or methacrolein at elevated temperature in the vapour phase with molecular oxygen over an oxide composition containing antimony, molybdenum, vanadium and iron as catalyst. The composition is prepared by heating components excluding molybdenum in a molecular oxygen containing gas at between 700 DEG and 900 DEG C., adding the molybdenum and heating the resultant composition in a molecular oxygen-containing gas at between 500 DEG and 900 DEG C. The molybdenum may be added as oxide or as ammonium molybdate or molybdic acid. Additional metals such as tin, nickel, cobalt, chromium, manganese or titanium may also be present and the composition may be upon supports such as alumina, pumice, silica, or titania.ALSO:Catalyst compositions for the oxidation of acrolein a methacrolein to acrylic or methacrylic acids, comprise antimony, molybdenum, vanadium and iron and are prepared by forming a primary composition containing all the components except molybdenum, heating the primary composition in a molecular oxygen containing gas at a temperature between 700 and 900 DEG C., adding the molybdenum and heating the resulting composition in a molecular oxygen containing gas at between 500 and 900 DEG C. The molybdenum may be added in the form of an oxide or heat decomposable compound such as ammonium molybdate a molybdic acid. Preferred atomic ratios are antimony to vanadium, 2:1 to 5:1; antimony to molybdenum, 1:1 to 1:5; and antimony to iron 2:1 to 16:1 and additional metal components are tin, nickel, cobalt, chromium, manganese or titanium. Supports of the catalysts may be alumina, pumice, silica or titania.
