Abstract

An adhesive composition suitable for bonding a urethane group-containing material to a nonurethane group-containing material comprises (a) a ketoxime blocked prepolymer formed by reacting a polyether based polyurethane prepolymer having 1 to 20 weight per cent of terminal isocyanate groups with a ketoxime having a M.W. less than 200; (b) an organic primary diamine having a pKb of less than 10.6, the amount of diamine being substantially that required to react with the terminal isocyanate groups of the prepolymer; and (c) at least 0.25 parts per 100 parts by weight of (a) of a reactive silane having the formula <FORM:1107419/C3/1> wherein R3, R4 and R5, which may be the same or different are C1- 5 alkyl radicals and Z is an aminopropyl, N,N - bis (b - hydroxyethyl) aminopropyl, 3,4 - epoxycyclohexylethyl or glycidoxypropyl radical. The polyether used in the prepolymer formation may be any conventional polyether suitably having a M.W. between 750 and 10,000 and if desired may be used in conjunction with a glycol having a M.W. of less than 350. Suitable polyisocyanates are 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate, M-phenylene diisocyanate and 4,41-methylene bis (phenylisocyanate) and is preferably used in a ratio of 1.2:1 to 3:1 with the polyether. The ketoxime may suitably be acetone oxime, methyl ethyl ketoxime, methyl isobutyl ketoxime, cyclohexanone oxime, acetophenone oxime and benzophenone oxime. Preferred diamines are 4,41-methylene dianiline, m-phenylene diamine, 2,4-toluene diamine and alkylene diamines. The silane may be 3,4-epoxycyclohexylethyl-trimethoxysilane, glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, N,N - bis (b - hydroxyethyl) g - aminopropyltriethoxysilane and g - aminopropyl-triethoxysilane. The ingredients of the composition may be dissolved in an inert solvent such as toluene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, ethylacetate and dimethylformamide. On heating the composition the ketoxime and solvent, if present, volatilize and the composition cured.
