Abstract

1,107,366. Disc brakes. DUNLOP CO., Ltd. 7 Dec., 1964 [14 Dec., 1963], No. 49481/63. Heading F2E. A disc brake comprises a rotatable disc 1, a caliper housing 8, a friction element 14 mounted for movement relative to the housing into frictional engagement with the disc, an actuating mechanism including a pressure plate 15, and means attaching the element to the plate comprising a resilient bush 19, having outwardly extending end flanges introduced into axially-aligned holes in the element and plate. The housing is pivoted by bolts 10 to links 9 which are themselves pivoted by a bolt 7 passing through a tube 5 secured to an arm 3 of a torque-taking support member 2 attached to a non-rotatable part of an axle casing thereby permitting the housing to move bodily in direction substantially parallel to the axis of the disc without tilting. Rubber or fibre bushes 11 inserted between the pivot bolts and the links prevent rattle and reduce brake squeal. The arm 3 has flat guide surfaces 4, perpendicular to the disc which the inside faces of the housing abut to transmit the braking torque thereto. Substantially rectangular friction elements 12 and 14, including metal backing plates 29 and 18 respectively, are located either side of the disc, the element 12 being bolted at 13 to one leg of the caliper. The other element 14 is connected at its radial inner edge to the pressure plate 15 by a spring clip 17 riveted thereto, and, at its radial outer edge by the bush 19 which is longitudinally slotted at one end, Fig. 4 (not shown). A detachable pin 25, passing through holes 26, bush 19 into a blind bore 27, prevents rotation of the friction elements on brake application and permits their removal radially outwards through the aperture 16. The element 14 is applied to the disc by a piston 24 working in a detachable cylinder 23, the other element 12 being applied by reactive movement of the housing. Alternative applying means, comprising a Bowden cable actuating links 32, 36 and 37, pivot the link 37 about a forked fulcrum member 38 secured, preferably through rubber bushes or springs, to a stabilizing arm 39 fixed to the support member 2. The member 38 is located at the end of a bolt 41 forming part of a wear adjustment means 42 described in Specification No. 1,090,756. The piston and cylinder may be provided with an automatic retraction mechanism of the type described in Specification No. 850,649.
