Abstract
Linear amorphous terpolymers of ethylene, an aliphatic alpha-olefin having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, and methyl-cyclopentadiene dimer are made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a halogen-containing catalyst consisting of the reaction product between vanadium compound and an organometallic compound of beryllium or aluminium, at a temperature between + 10 DEG C. and - 80 DEG C., and using as the polymerization medium the mixture of olefinic compounds kept in the liquid state. The methylcyclopentadiene dimer is obtained by conventional processes of cracking petroleum hydrocarbons. The Specification contains a long list of suitable catalyst components. The alpha-olefin may be propylene or butene-1. In Example I, liquid propylene, methylcyclopentadiene dimer, and ethylene were copolymerized at - 10 DEG C. in the presence of (C2H5)2AlCl and VCl4 whilst in Example II, the same monomers were copolymerized in the presence of (C2H5)2AlCl and VoCl3. The copolymers are completely soluble in boiling n-heptane and may be sulphur vulcanized using conventional mixes.
