Abstract

Lightweight cellular concrete of density 30-90 lbs/cu. ft. is made by mixing water at 45 DEG C. with concrete additives including a metal powder and caustic soda or a lime-bearing material which will react with the powder to produce hydrogen gas, said additives constituting 4-5 3/4 oz. per cu. ft. of final concrete output, and with supplementary material providing a retardant, mixing this liquid with a dry mix comprising cement and/or lime and a siliceous filler in finely particulate form in the ratio cement and/or lime:filler 2 : 3 or 3 : 4 parts by weight, and setting the slurry thus formed. The retardant may comprise glycerine and/or borax. The siliceous filler may consist of or contain pumice dust, ground foamed slag or pulverized fuel ash. The dry mix may also contain, per cu. ft. of concrete output, 1/2 -8 oz. reinforcing asbestos or glass fibres. The concrete may be set at 32-40 DEG C. in a humid chamber and then air cured or autoclaved.
