Abstract
Thermosetting resins are prepared by condensing 1-2 moles of an imidazolidin-2-one of the formula <FORM:1107236/C3/1> with 1 mole of an a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde: R3-CH=CH-CHO in an acid medium. R1 and R2 are H or C1-C18 alkyl radicals and R3 is a C1-C18 alkyl radical. As an example N,N1-ethylene urea are condensed with crotonaldehyde in butanol containing hydrochloric acid. The minimum pH of the reactants may be 2 and reaction may take place at 30-100 DEG C. Part (e.g. 5-25 mole per cent) of the unsaturated aldehyde may be replaced by a saturated aldehyde, e.g. lauric aldehyde. The resins of the invention may be blended with a plasticizing (e.g. castor oil modified) alkyd resin to obtain surface coatings which may be cured by baking at an elevated temperature (e.g. at 150 DEG C. for 30 minutes).ALSO:A coating composition comprising, in solution in n-butanol, a mixture of an aminoplast obtained by condensing ethylene urea with crotonaldehyde and an oil-modified alkyd resin is coated onto phosphated steel. The coating is cured by baking at 150 DEG C for 30 minutes.
