Abstract

A painting composition comprises a granular solid substance, an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resin and 0.01 to 1.0% by weight of polyethylene oxide based on the weight of the granular solid substance plus the resin. In Example 1, a composition containing polyethylene oxide, an aqueous dispersion of an a -methyl styrene/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer, xylene, polyvinyl alcohol and granular serpentine is prepared. In Example 2, the copolymer used is a styrene/n-butyl acrylate polymer, the granular substance is yellow marble and no polyvinyl alcohol is present. An aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl acetate is mixed in Examples 3 to 6 with polyethylene oxide and (3) coloured wood flour, (4) perlite and (5) and (6) white marble. In another example, the composition comprises serpentine, an aqueous polyvinyl acetate dispersion and polyethylene oxide. The compositions are applied to substrates such as slate and concrete (see Division B2).ALSO:Concrete or slate is coated with a composition comprising a granular solid substance, an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resin and 0.01 to 1.0% by weight of polyethylene oxide based on the weight of granular solid plus resin is applied to substrates using a mortar gun. In one specific example, the granular solid is macadam of serpentine, the resin is polyvinyl acetate and the substrate is a slate plate. The solid in Example 3 is wood flour, the resin is polyvinyl acetate. Other resins specified are polyvinyl alcohol, and styrene-n-butyl acrylate copolymer.
