A portable device for sampling air/gas mixtures e.g. in mines comprises an electrically driven extraction pump 1, a bayonet fitting 6 being provided for connecting a sampling tube 2 to the outlet of the pump. A connector 7 allows a suction line to be connected to the pump so that samples can be drawn from desired locations. A number of sampling tubes 2 can be filled and then removed for subsequent analysis. The pump 1 and a battery 3 are accommodated in a casing 4 with a trigger controlled switch 5 for operating the pump, the sampling tube 2 serving as a handle for the device.
