Abstract

A spinning ring comprises a traveller-bearing surface at least part of which is made of "rubber material", which is defined as natural or synthetic material which can recover from large deformations quickly and forcibly. It should be of high tensile strength, resilience, hardness and resistance to lubricants, wear and corrosion, and be capable of bonding. It should be capable of treatment, vulcanizing, or curing, to develop these properties, and may include accelerators, fillers or reinforcing agents. It may be a coating on a base of, e.g. rubber or steel; it may be compounded of more than one material, or it may be a coating developed by fluorination or graft polymerization. The material may be foamed rubber having a substantial proportion of the interstices in communication with one another so that fluid lubricant may be applied to the traveller-bearing surface by permeating through the material under capillary action or externally-applied pressure. The material may be one wetted by the lubricant. The material may be in the form of one or more inserts, which need not be level with the upper and lower parts of the body to prevent damage when the traveller is put on or taken off, or the body may support a rubber ring. Examples of suitable synthetic materials are polymerized di-enes such as polyisoprene, polychloroprene, co-polymers of ethylene and propylene, of styrene and butadiene, of acrylonitrile and butadiene, polyisobutylene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polysulphide rubbers, silicone rubbers, and fluorinated rubbers. In Figs. 1, 2 and 4, not shown, a ring is of rectangular section and is held in the holder by an integral horizontally-extending ring. The ring may be of rubber or comprise a steel body with an annular rubber insert, e.g. of foamed rubber supplied with lubricant by a pump. In Fig. 3, not shown, a wick is position in an annular groove on a rubber ring with one end of the wick dipping into a reservoir formed in the rail.
