Fibres are obtained by repeated cutting from an edge of a polymer film oriented in the direction of the edge. A large number of fibres are cut simultaneously by forming a block 1 of a number of films having the same orientation and planing all the edges simultaneously, the resulting fibres being removed by take-off mechanism 7, (Fig. 1) or by forming a reel 11 of the film on a mandrel and feeding the end of the reel against a rapidly revolving circular cutter 14 (Fig. 2). Alternatively the reel can be mounted in a lathe and a lathe tool fed against the reel. Polypropylene and polyethylene are the preferred polymers and the natural orientation of extruded film may be increased by drawing, e.g. two and a half times at 98‹C., before cutting into fibres. The film may be oriented transversely but to a lesser degree than longitudinally. The resulting fibres, which have dimensions dependent on film thickness and rate of feed in the cutting operation, may be shredded to obtain finer fibres. Staple fibres are obtained by notching the block in Fig. 1, before planing.
