Dental aspirator apparatus (see Figure 1) comprises a housing 2 containing an electrically operated suction fan 4 connected by a pipe 6 to an expansion chamber 3 in which is located a cyclone separator 7. Entering tangentially into the cyclone separator is one end of a pipe 8 the other end of which is provided with a nozzle (not shown) for insertion into the mouth of a patient. The cyclone separator preferably has an axial air outlet 9 in its top communicating with the expansion chamber and an axial liquid outlet 11 in its bottom for discharging liquid into a removable receptacle 12. As operatively used aspirated material, i.e. air and entrained liquid, passing from the mouth of the patient to the suction fan is detrained of liquid by the cyclone separator so that moisture-free air is withdrawn from the expansion chamber by the suction fan to be exhausted to atmosphere. The removable receptacle preferably is mounted on a platform 16 which is hinged at 17 within the expansion chamber and which is spring-influenced at 18 (for example by a pair of coil springs) so as yieldably to oppose downward movement under the increasing weight of liquid entering the receptacle. The platform preferably is associated with an adjustable electrical switch 19 wired in circuit with the electric motor which operates the suction fan, so that the motor is stopped automatically when a desired amount of liquid has accumulated in the receptacle. The cyclone separator preferably is carried by an adjustable mounting 13, which is movable transversely of the expansion chamber, for example upon a pair of opposed parallel rails 14, to facilitate removal of the receptacle, in the upper portion of which is located the lower portion of the cyclone separator when the cyclone separator and the receptacle are in operative position within the expansion chamber.
