A rectified A.C. consummable electrode arc welding system is arranged to provide either an output suitable for spray or short-circuiting metal transfer, or a pulsed output alternating with or superimposed on a steady current. The pulsed output may be provided by a short circuitable impedance, or by taps and transformer winding, a higher voltage tap being switched by a contactor or thyristor. Threephase arrangements are described in the Specification, one of which will supply pulses of 150, 100 or 50 c.p.s. by the selective operation of a switching system.
