Abstract

1,106,677. Biaxially orienting polyamide film. W. R. GRACE & CO. 21 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 27734/66. Heading B5B. A film of a synthetic transparent amorphous polyamide (particularly a polyamide formed by the polycondensation of terephthalic acid and/ or isophthalic acid with an alkyl-substituted hexamethylene diamine) is biaxially stretched at 65‹ to 190‹ C. to such an extent that its initial dimensions in both the longitudinal and transverse directions are increased by at least 50%. The film may be stretched on a tenter frame or by securing the edge of the film in a "Cryovac" Hat Tester, heating the film to the stretching temperature, and applying compressed air against one. surface of the film to form the film into a " hat " of specific volume, the " hat " being hemispherical in shape and of uniform thickness. The biaxially stretched film may be heat shrunk at 60‹ to 180‹ C., e.g. by contacting it with air at 150‹ to 180‹ C., water at 85‹ to 100‹ C., steam at 125‹ to 180‹ C. or ethylene glycol at 65‹ to 90‹ C.
