Abstract

Novel butyne-2 derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1106609/C2/1> wherein n is 3, 4 or 5 and <FORM:1106609/C2/2> is a 5-8 membered saturated heterocycle which may contain oxygen as a second heteroatom and may be substituted with a straight or branched chain alkyl group <FORM:1106609/C2/3> being other than a pyrrolidino group when n is 3 and the acid addition salts thereof are prepared by reacting a N-propargyl lactam of general formula <FORM:1106609/C2/4> with a suitable heterocyclic compound and formaldehyde in the presence of a copper compound as catalyst. The compounds of Formula III in which n is 4 and 5 are prepared by reacting propargyl bromide with the sodio derivative of valerolactam and caprolactam respectively, and converted to their oxalates. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise, as active ingredient, a compound of the first general formula above or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof and a vehicle or excipient. The compositions may be in the form of tablets, dragees, capsules or drinkable or injectable ampoules and may be administered orally or parenterally. The compositions are stated to have anti-cholinergic activity.
