Abstract

1,106,458. Safety devices for lifts. S. DAVALL & SONS Ltd. 30 March, 1965 [2 Oct., 1964], No. 40308/64. Heading B8L. [Also in Divisions B7, F2 and G1] A device which is adapted to either arrest or release a movable control member on the occurrence of a predetermined amount of vibration, change in gravitational force (owing to acceleration or deceleration), temperature, pressure &c. consists of a cylindrical container partially filled with steel balls, and a paddle wheel rotatable about a normally vertical axis disposed so that the paddles are either partially immersed in the balls or lie just above the balls, a biasing force being applied to the paddle wheel, tending to rotate it, such that, in the former case, the paddle wheel is normally prevented from rotating but can rotate on the occurrence of more than said predetermined amount of vibration or other physical change which affects the forces resisting relative movement between the particles, or, in the latter case, the paddle wheel rotates under-the biasing force until such vibration &c. exceeds the predetermined amount whereby the balls obstruct the paddles and arrest them. The device may be used to operate a lift safety device when the lift reaches a predetermined degree of free fall, at which the gravitational reactions between the balls and the container may be arranged to be reduced sufficiently to allow rotation of the paddle for this purpose. Other applications of the device are also referred to (see Divisions B7, F2 and G1).
